Ramanandra Raya: A sahajiya or a Raganuga Bhakta? : Journal of Vaishnava Studies

Abstract

The 20th Bengal Studies Conference, for which an earlier version of this paper was prepared, occured during the 5ooth anniversary of the birth / appearance of Visvambhara Misra in Bengal. This ecstatic devotee of Krishna, better known by  his sannyasi name, Krishna Caitanya, or simply Caitanya, is revered bybmillions as Krishna himself descended in human-like form tp propogate devotion to himself. It seemed appropriate to focus attention upon Caitanya and those who claim inspiration from him.
