Abstract
Antal, the foremost female devotee for the Sri Vaisnavas of South India, probably lived in the ninth century. Her tamil poems of intense love are included in the "Four thousand Divine Verses" considered the "Tamil Veda" by Sri Vaisnavas. Among them, her poem Tiruppavai" is judged to embody the essence of Vedanta, which is loving desire for Bhagavan Krsna.
