Abstract

This important book has four aspects: (1) It is an extended introduction to the founding architects of Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava theology (especially from the writings of Rūpa Gosvāmin and Jīva Gosvāmin in the sixteenth century); (2) includes translations of key scriptures in the Hindu tradition and especially the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava tradition, namely, an abridged translation of the Bhāgavatapurāṇa, a full translation of the Śikṣāṣṭaka attributed to Caitanya Mahāprabhu (early 16th century), and a full translation of the Nāradabhaktisūtra;
(3) offers a comparative analysis between Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava theology, the Bhāgavatapurāṇa and philosophies of the Yogasūtra; and (4) engenders a critical and constructive application of the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava theology to contemporary issues in popular religion, culture, and academic discourse.
