Abstract

Narasimha mantra (also called Narasimha Mahāmantra/Narasimha Mūlamantra) is an intricate part of the religious life of the Telugus. Narasimha mantra is not only part temple rituals, but it is also part of regular
recitations and vows of devotees—it marks the beginning of Bhāgavatamela theatrical festivals in southern India. This follows from the traditional convention of Narasimha established as the supreme deity in Telugu regions (the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana), since at least 1100 C.E. (Vemsani 2009: 35-52).
