Abstract

Every generation is set the challenge of sifting their scriptures for ethical and practical guidance on the new and emerging problems of their world. Today, environmental degradation has reached epidemic proportions; almost everyone is aware that our so-called “civilised” ways of life are causing environmental changes that will cause harm to future generations. Many also believe that the World Religions have a key role to play in securing a better and more sustainable future2 because “Ultimately, the environmental crisis is a crisis of the mind”3 or, more properly, the human spirit.
