Abstract

Within the first few moments of viewing Sita Sings the Blues, you realize that this is not like any Ramayana you have heard, seen, or
read before. The story begins as the screen pans over the image of a sultry and buxom Flash-animated Lakṣmī accentuating her “Betty
Boop-like” features. Simultaneously, however, the new incarnation of the traditional deity is in a familiar setting standing atop a lotus on the waving (or one might say churning) cosmic ocean.
